Charleston police charged a 35-year-old woman with murder after a man, 46, was killed and a woman, 47, was shot on South Street downtown on Wednesday night.

A 35-year-old Charleston woman has been charged with murder after a shooting on South Street downtown left a man dead and a woman seriously injured, the Charleston Police Department said Thursday.

Officers were called to South Street at about 10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14. They found a 46-year-old man dead from a gunshot wound to the neck, police said. A second person who had been shot, a 47-year-old woman, was inside a nearby home.

Detectives learned that the two were shot by an acquaintance after an argument over a drug transaction, according to the department.

The arrest

Detectives arrested Susan Lee Wright, 35, of Charleston, at police headquarters Thursday, the department said. She is charged with:

  • murder
  • assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature
  • possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime
  • unlawful possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a violent offense

Wright was being held at the Charleston County Detention Center pending a bond hearing, police said.

An arrest or charge is an accusation. Every person is presumed innocent unless and until convicted in court.

The department has not released the names of the man who died or the woman who was hurt.
