Storms and floods
Charleston’s storm outages often come with flooding. During last weekend’s Hurricane Isaias rain and king tides, the city logged a downed power line and two downed trees by 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, along with 21 road closures. Never drive or wade through floodwater near a fallen line.
Charleston County Emergency Management’s advice:
- Keep flashlights and extra batteries; avoid candles and kerosene lamps.
- Turn the refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings ahead of a storm and open them only when necessary.
- If the power goes out, turn off major appliances to reduce the surge when it comes back.
- After a storm, stay away from loose or dangling lines and report them to the power company, police or fire department.
