The City of Charleston does not run schools. Homes in the Charleston County parts of the city, the peninsula, West Ashley, James Island and Johns Island, are served by Charleston County School District (CCSD), 843-937-6300. Homes on Daniel Island and in Cainhoy, the Berkeley County parts of the city, are served by Berkeley County School District, 843-899-8600.
School zones do not follow the city limits. Each district draws its own elementary, middle and high school zones. A few schools that serve city addresses sit just outside the city, Camp Road Middle on James Island among them, and several schools inside it take students by application, not by address.

West Ashley High had the most students in 2024-25, 2,069, and Pattison’s Academy the fewest, 53, according to the state’s report card data.
