Inner West Ashley is the older part of West Ashley, across the Ashley River from the peninsula. The city’s City Plan says West Ashley “has been one of the city’s main growth areas since the 1960’s” and that its neighborhoods “range from near-century-old neighborhoods close to the Peninsula to new subdivisions west of I-526.” The plan maps inner and outer West Ashley separately; this page covers the part east of I-526, and our outer West Ashley page covers the rest.

Where it is
Inner West Ashley runs from the Ashley River west to I-526, and south to Wappoo Creek and the Stono River. Savannah Highway (U.S. 17), Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, Ashley River Road (S.C. 61) and Folly Road Boulevard are the main roads. We drew the line at I-526 and, south of Savannah Highway, straight south from where the interstate ends. Of the 1,510 points we checked inside the city limits, 99% were in ZIP code 29407, all in Charleston County. Parts of West Ashley are unincorporated county land; check a parcel on Charleston County’s GIS Parcel Viewer.
The city’s neighborhood council map lists about 35 associations here, among them Avondale, Byrnes Downs, Old Windermere, South Windermere, Crescent, Wappoo Heights, Moreland, Westwood, Ardmore/Sherwood Forest, Lenevar, Northbridge Terrace, Albemarle and Dupont Station. The City Plan names Avondale as an example of its “Suburban” land use, with four to eight homes an acre. It says the highest ground in West Ashley is along Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and parts of Ashley River Road inside I-526, and that those areas and the former Citadel Mall site are where the most infill and redevelopment may happen. The Dupont/Wappoo planning area has its own community plan and zoning.
